If you are a team captain, please make sure you are familiar with your duties and the general club rules regarding competitive league tennis, as set out below.
The Management Committee, listening to the views of players who are interested/active/volunteering, decides:
- the principal contact(s) for each League
- which & how many teams to put forward for each League, each season
- in broad terms, which days of the week to prioritise for which teams’ Home matches
- the captains of the individual teams
- someone to take on the preparation & management of an overall fixtures timetable
- someone to be ‘ball-person’, responsible for buying match balls and supplying the team captains.
The Management Committee may delegate some or all of the above to the Club Captain (if there is one) or other named people.
One member of the Management Committee, the default person being the Secretary, will ensure that the above planning takes place before the relevant League starts organising its fixtures for the coming season
Team captains, in co-operation with other team captains as necessary:
- familiarise themselves with the relevant League’s Rules
- decide who to register for their team, and then keep the registrations up to date
- decide who will play in each match, managing substitutions etc as necessary
- for Home matches
- book match dates into the online calendar
- organise catering
- liaise with the ‘ball person’ to ensure that they have sufficient balls for their team’s Home matches
- Ensure comfort and wellbeing of visiting teams
- are the weather contact/decision-maker for their matches, and responsible for rearranging any cancelled/disrupted matches
- ensure match results are correctly & quickly submitted
- collect match fees from the individual players and pay their teams’ total match fees to the Membership Secretary or Treasurer, with a target of doing so within a month after their teams’ last match
A team captain may agree with someone else that they will carry out any of the above tasks, but they retain overall responsibility.
