This year’s finals day took place on a lovely warm and dry Sunday on the 15th of September. Viv organised the weather and the BBQ and Jana had made sure that all the tournament matches had been completed in time for the finals. That’s how last year’s report began… Unfortunately, Viv forgot to organise the weather this year… Luckily, Anita came up with a cunning plan and arranged for the club to hold its finals day on the indoor courts at the uni. No BBQ this year but still plenty of great tennis to watch.
THANK-YOUS
Before I tell you who won, I would like to thank a few people who made this year’s finals day possible. I will call them the Three Musketeers.
- VIV, who, with the help of our coach James, organised the junior finals and took on the role of umpire for the red ball final (not an easy task!). She also organised for people to bring food to share and provided me with much needed moral support when things weren’t going quite as planned in the run-up to Sunday. I think we can safely say that she has redeemed herself for failing to get the weather sorted this year.
- ANITA, who came up with the idea of moving finals day to the indoor courts at the uni and who spent most of Friday writing messages and emails and making phone calls to get it all arranged. It should have been so straightforward but turned into a complete nightmare!
- VAL, who filled out stupid forms and supplied the necessary paperwork so that we would be allowed to hold the club finals at the uni.
A big thank you also to all of you who came to support the players and brought lovely food (and there was lots!). Thank you 🙂
THE TENNIS
As usual, the tennis was great, but the highlight for me was the men’s singles final between Jon and Henry – long rallies, lots of brilliant winning shots, hardly any unforced errors – really fun to watch.
JUNIORS
Red ball final: Tom Mason beat Zach Allwright and was presented with the 8 & under Red Ball cup
Orange ball final: Sidney Davis beat Jack Mason and was presented with the Boys 12 & under cup
Viv said: “Both matches were great, taken suitably seriously by the juniors involved, whilst still, I hope, being great fun, and were well supported by parents and siblings, which was lovely.”
MEN’S SINGLES
Henry Cornish beat Jon Wills 7-5 6-1
LADIES’ SINGLES
Wendy Gundry beat Viv Baber 6-2 6-3
MIXED DOUBLES
Henry Cornish and Wendy Gundry beat Jon Wills and Karen Dalby 6-4 2-6 10-7 (championship tie-break)
LADIES’ DOUBLES
Selena Shaw and Poppy Coupe beat Jana Garnsworthy and Anita Hill 6-4 6-2
MEN’S DOUBLES
Jon Wills and Chris Bury beat Mac Grabowski and Neil Baber by default (Neil was standing in for Colin who couldn’t make finals day. Although Neil and Mac beat Jon and Chris 7-6 7-6, they felt that Jon and Chris should get the trophy as Neil was not really a fair replacement for Colin. How very gallant of them!)
We do not seem to have girls results or photos?????
Hi Aubrey, unfortunately, there are very few girls in coaching and it wasn’t possible for them to take part.
Thanks for the great report and photos. And I’d like to thank you Jana, as a fourth musketeer, for making finals day happen at the university, with Anita and Viv. It was a good team effort and the day worked really well.
