Social Evening & Quiz January 2026 (Report and Photos)

On Friday, 16 January 2026, the club organised a New Year’s Social & Quiz Night at the Rec. As always, members brought lovely food to share and after the initial socialising, Anita put her manager’s hat on, got everyone into teams and the quiz, which she had prepared, could start.

After the initial round of some quirky number facts, which was a lot of fun but might as well have been called the “Take a Blind Guess” round, an intense round of picture-based word puzzles followed. Round 3 was all about tennis, so people had a bit more of a clue as to what the answer might be. Everyone was glad to take a breather after that, have a drink, eat a bit of food and chat with their tennis chums.

Round 4 was seemingly easy, but proved to be far from. Each team was presented with 17 photos taken over the years at various club events and hiding in the archives of this website. The snag was that Anita had erased the people’s faces. The task was to name everyone in those photos, quite a challenge. There was one person who was at an obvious advantage, as she had taken most of those photos, and this round possibly meant that her team eventually won the quiz. Unfair? I don’t think so 😀

The last round was general knowledge and full of interesting questions. Did you know, for example, that the three tunnels in the Great Escape were called Tom, Dick and Harry?

It was close, but in the end, The Four Unwise Tennis Players, consisting of Jana, David Jolly, Sarah and Rachel proved not that unwise after all and lifted the imaginary quiz trophy. They were closely followed in joint second place by the Biddies With Balls (Anne, Laura, Linda and Val) and the Funky Chickens (Colin, Mac, his wife Mel and Laura’s husband Peregrine). The Rusty Brains (Chris C., Emma, Helen C., Helen H. and Sheila) came fourth and the Foundations (Andy S. and his wife Jenny, Wendy and hubby) half a point behind in fifth.

Thank you to everyone who came, to the Rec Club for opening up and manning the bar and especially to Anita and her husband Andy for preparing the quiz. A very enjoyable evening, indeed!

I have a collection of tennis books that I would like to share with your members. I would like to bring them to your clubhouse, on a Read ‘n’ Return basis, so that everyone can benefit from them

    1. Hi Tim, that’s a wonderful idea. I will drop you an email and we can arrange a day and time to meet at the club. Best wishes, Jana
