On Sunday, 16th July, the club held its second Wimbledon tournament and social. The event was kindly organised by Sarah, as has become the rule with most events in recent years, and consisted of a doubles tournament and an outing to the Beer Engine to watch the men’s singles final between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz (which Alcaraz won).
16 members entered the tournament. The format was 10 rounds of 13-minute tie-breaks, each round played with/against different players. Those playing first were told to come early to make sure play started at 10 am as showers were forecast for the morning. At 9:55, 7 players playing in round 1 were raring to go. The 8th player was busy baking! Harry phoned at 9:57 informing Sarah that he had a quiche in the oven and would be a while 😀 Panic in Sarah’s eyes ensued as the rounds followed an exact pattern and could not be messed around with :/ However, Sarah put her thinking cap on and found a way forward. Harry turned up by 10:30 with two quiches and two chocolate tarts, all of which he made!!! They were delicious and well worth the wait 🙂
The tournament was played in a friendly and competitive spirit. The weather held up, with only one heavy shower at about midday, which we made use of for a group photo in the clubhouse. One point was earned for each game point won. At the end of the morning, Sarah added it all up and the king and queen were crowned. Frederiek was the best lady accumulating 97 points and Tom Browne the best man with an amazing 108 points. Each received a tube of Babolat balls.
