This year’s finals day took place on a lovely warm and dry Sunday on the 15th of September. Viv organised the weather and the BBQ and Jana had made sure that all the tournament matches had been completed in time for the finals. Once again, we had excellent numbers of both long-standing and newer members turn up, socialise and cheer on the players.
JUNIORS
For the first time in quite a few years the juniors had their own competition and it was great to see so many of them involved – a big thank you goes to our coach Jon for making it happen.
LADIES’ SINGLES
Unfortunately, the ladies’ final could not be played as one of the ladies thought the prospect of walking in the Rockies more exciting than playing tennis in Newton St Cyres – very bad planning, Frederiek 🙂 This meant that Selena won the ladies’ singles by default.
MEN’S SINGLES
The men’s singles was an almost carbon copy of Jon and Henry’s finals match from 2022. Jon had an impressive start and in no time at all was 4-1 up. Soon it was 5-2. At 5-4 40:30 Jon had all but won the first set with a brilliant backhand crosscourt dropshot. However, Henry managed to get to it and play an amazing angled cross-court shot back, out of Jon’s reach. After that, it was all Henry. Jon put up one last fight and pulled it back from 2-5 to 4-5 in the second set, but it was just too late and Henry won 7-5 6-4.
MEN’S DOUBLES
The men’s doubles was contested by Tim Allwright & Dave Brown and Mac Grabowski & Tom Browne. Mac and Tom took that one quite convincingly 6-1 6-4.
LADIES’ DOUBLES
The ladies was contested by Selena Shaw & Wendy Gundry and Laura Leigh & Rachel Dowle. Selena and Wendy won 6-2 6-0.
MIXED DOUBLES
Selena was going for the treble and got it. Together with Gerry Bowden-Thomson they beat Laura & Henry in a super-close match 7-6 6-4.
3rd PLACE MEN’S SINGLES
The 3rd place match took place between Mac and Dan Harding. Dan hit some amazing shots but, in the end, Mac’s game proved just too consistent for him. Mac wins 6-0 6-4.
